AAMU Stuns Southern 64-47

Box Score

Baton Rouge, La. - Nursing a 36-22 halftime lead, Alabama A&M's Jasmine Sanders, NaDra Robertson and Alyssa Strickland combined for 21 second half points to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 64-47 win over Southern University on Monday, Feb 18th in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

The win marked the 150th victory for head coach Altherias Warmley during her 11 year career at the helm of the women’s basketball program.

Jasmine Sanders led all scorers with 16 points while NaDra Robertson and Alyssa Strickland each posted 15.  Shundray Davis quietly scored nine points on 3 for 4 from the three point line.  She also pulled in 10 rebounds and dished out four assists.

A&M outscored the SU women’s basketball team 22-18 in points in the paint, 13-3 in second chance points, and 24-12 in bench points.  AAMU outrebounded Southern 39-31 but committed 17 turnovers compared to SU’s 10.

The Lady Bulldogs set the tone in the first half when Davis hit her first three-pointer at the 18:48 mark on the clock to take the lead and never look back.  From there Alabama A&M shot 55 percent on 12-22 in the first half posting the second highest point total this season at 36.  The Jaguars could not find their grove as the Maroon & White clamped down on defense and forced them into nine of 29 from the field for 31%.  A&M would take a 36-22 half-time lead.

The double digit lead would stand the test of time as A&M never loss the lead the entire second half on their way to win number nine overall and eighth in the conference. A ball control offense and steady defense allowed the Warmley led squad to earn their first victory in Baton Rouge for the first time in over 10 years.

The Jaguars would get no closer than 12 points multiples times but AAMU was able to maintain their lead as they completely controlled the inside scoring and rebounds battle.

A&M sits in sole custody of fourth place in the league standings and will look to move northward when they welcome Texas Southern University to a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday, Feb. 23rd.
