Baseball captures second win with a 6-4 defeat over Lipscomb

Box Score

NORMAL—Head coach Michael Tompkins claimed his 10th victory as a head coach when the Bulldogs captured a 6-4 victory over Lipscomb University Tuesday night.

“It was a good win for us tonight. We played pretty good defense and pitched out of jams,” Tompkins mentioned. “Our hitting was good all night led by a grand slam from sophomore Bradley Black. We found a way to close out a game.”

The Bisons (4-5) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as LU’s Drew Adams led off the game with a walk and then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the Bulldogs (2-8). That led to a sacrifice fly by in the next at bat to give Lipscomb the 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs then made the Bisons pay for a leadoff walk in the fifth inning by manufacturing a run and tying the game at one.

A&M kept the offensive attack going in the sixth inning as the Bulldogs loaded the bases for Bradley Black, who would be the hero turning on a pitch and yanking it over the left field fence for the grand slam and a 5-1 lead.  This was Black’s second homerun of his career.

A two-out walk and a steal by the Bulldogs in the eighth would lead to a run when a single to right made it a 6-1 cushion for A&M.

Lipscomb finally got the offense going again in the eighth inning as Tyson Ashcraft walked to leadoff the frame.

After two singles to load the bases, a Bisons player, was beaned to make it a 6-2 game.
Stewart then kept the rally going with a single to shortstop deep in the hole that scored Chandler from third. The Bisons then pulled to within two.

Lipscomb threatened in the ninth inning getting a pair of runners aboard but A&M’s Walton Ashwander moved to the mound from second base and got the final out of the game to earn the save.

Sanchez Tucker got the win for Alabama A&M in relief pitching four and one-thirds innings allowing three earned runs and seven hits. Tucker walked three and struck out three. Knott took the loss for Lipscomb giving up five earned runs and five hits in five and two-thirds innings of work.

The Bulldogs will begin a four game home stand beginning this weekend with their conference opener vs. Jackson State University.  The three game series will be played on Saturday, and Sunday, March 2nd and 3rd. First pitch is set for 12:0 p.m. both days.
