Bulldogs fall 7-1 to Southern

Box Score

FORT WORTH -- The Alabama A&M baseball team fell 7-1 to Southern University in the first round of the conference tournament.  The Bulldogs will now play Prairie View A&M at 4:45 p.m. today at LaGrave field.

A&M took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when senior Deon Hall sent a shot over the left field wall for his first homerun of the year.

Unfortunately that was the only scoring the Bulldogs would do as they fell to Southern University 7-1 in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament in Fort Worth, Texas.

AAMU collected four hits compared to Southern’s six.  Austin Hulsey, Cornelius Woods, T.J. Lindsey and Hall each accounted for the connections at the plate for the Maroon & White.

Starting pitcher Caleb Bowen held the Jaguars down until the fifth inning when a walk put the Jaguars Tyler Kirksey on base with two outs on the board.  SU’s Kevin Williams then hit a shot to center left that saw outfielder Brandyn Crutcher dive and missed the ball allowing two to score to give SU their first lead at 2-1.  The Jaguars extended their lead the very next inning with a five run two hit sixth inning that saw a homerun and a single to give SU the eventual win.

The Bulldogs threaten in the top of the seventh inning with bases loaded but Crutcher faced a 1-2 count and swung to miss the final pitch of the inning ending A&M’s chances of scoring.

“I thought we had good approaches at the plate, but we didn’t execute when we had our opportunities,” said head coach Michael Tompkins. “That gave them momentum which lead to the big inning.”

The Maroon & White will now play Prairie View A&M in the 4:45 p.m. game on Thursday, May 16.

“We have to go out and play in game two and survive in the tournament,” mentioned the second year head coach.
