Baseball splits with Alcorn in double header action

NORMAL – The Bulldogs sticks were on today in Lorman, Mississippi as A&M combined for a season high 20 hits to claim a 15-13 win in the first game of their three game series with the Braves of Alcorn State.

The contest was a high scoring affair as the Bulldogs scored in six of the 11 innings played.  AAMU scored four runs then added three in the top of the second to grab a 7-4 lead after three innings.

Alcorn then went to work in the bottom of the fifth with a five run, four hit half inning that saw only two runners left on base. The inning saw the Braves tie the score at nine all.

The game went scoreless over the next two innings then saw A&M add three to the scoreboard with a Austin Husley, Cornel Woods and Bradley Black scored grabbing a three run 12-9 lead.  They extended their lead with another run in the top of the ninth.

Alcorn would not be outdone as they would put together another big inning scoring four runs off of three hits to keep the game going tying the score at 13-13.

With the score tied after nine innings AAMU scored the winning runs when Patrick Dodson doubled to score Deon Hall then Dodson scored off a Julio Nunez single to give the Bulldogs their fourth victory in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Nunez, Bradley Black, and Jordan Friend each connected on four hits in six at bats.  Starting pitcher Sanchez Tucker earned his third win of the year.

Game two saw a different outcome as Alcorn was able to hold on for a 7-6 win over the Maroon & White. 

The finale on the day saw the Braves open up their own 3-0 advantage before A&M was able to respond with a three run inning in the top of the fourth. Dodson scored off of Bradley’s single then Hulsey scored when Friend walked.  The third run came on the next at bat when T.J. Lindsey walked to score Nunez.

Alcorn came right back and scored a run in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings to collect seven total points.  A&M would not go quietly as they scored two runs in the seventh inning and one in the ninth to total six and fall one shy of tying the second contest of the doubleheader.

Nunez led A&M with three hits in five at bats with a run and a run batted in.  Black totaled three RBIs in the second game.  Pitcher Josh Freeman earned the loss and fell to 3-10 on the year.

The series will be decided on Sunday, May 5th at 1:00 p.m.
