Alabama A&M defeats Miss. Valley State 12-11

Box Score
NORMAL – A&M baseball took game two of their doubleheader with Mississippi Valley on Thursday with a 12-11 win in Greenville, Miss.

For the 18th time this year the Maroon & White accomplished double digit hits as a team with 12 and the fourth occasion with double digit runs with 12.

Cornelius Woods led the team going 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs.  Julio Nunez went 2 for 3 with a run and a run batted in while Jordan Friend ended the game with a run, a RBI and two hits in four at bats.

Josh Freeman earned his fourth win of the year after six innings of work and seven strikeouts.

Of the 23 runs scored in the second stanza, 17 of those were scored in the first three innings as AAMU scored a season first 11 runs in the first three innings while Valley totaled six runs during their time at the plate.

The Bulldogs tallied their final run in the top of the fourth to total 12 runs when Friend hit his third homerun of the year.

Holding a 12-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning A&M head coach Michael Tompkins put in senior Walton Ashwander to close out the game.  Things took an interesting turn then as Valley took advantage of the change and connected on five hits resulting in five runs.

With the tying run at first base and two outs on the scoreboard, Grant Reifers stepped to plate.  A combination of fast balls and a mean curve sent the Greenville, Miss native back to the bench closing out the Bulldogs second win of the day.

The six conference victories is coach Tompkins most at the helm of the baseball program and ties for the most by A&M since 2009.

A&M will close out their regular season with another doubleheader versus the Devils today beginning at 11:00 a.m.
