Women's Basketball Earns First SWAC Win

Normal- On Saturday afternoon the Bulldogs took on the Lady Lions of Arkansas Pine-Bluff at Elmore Gymnasium for this season's SWAC home opener.

The Bulldogs enter the contest 2-10 overall and 0-2 in league play after falling to Grambling 90-77 in their latest contest.

The Maroon & White began the game with high energy and a strong determination to gain their first conference win of the season.

AAMU jumped on the score board first with a jumper by Ebony Johnson making the score 2-0 at the 19:45 mark. By the 16th minute of the game the Bulldogs increased their lead 13-7.

The increased energy proved beneficial to the team as they dominated the first half. The Maroon and White took a 50-29 lead at the break. 

The Bulldogs shot 53 percent from the floor hitting 16 of 30. They also shot a blazing 81 percent from both behind the arc and the charity strip.  The teams 19 bench points helped A&M garner their lead.

Alyssa Strickland's 17 points lead all first half scorers. Strickland went 5-5 from distance in 14 minutes of play. The Bulldogs second leading scorer for the period was Taylor Sippial who added nine.

The second half picked up where the first left off, with an energized Maroon and White squad ready for action.  By the 12th minute Alabama A&M increased their lead to 18 with a score of 64-46.  AAMU dominated the entire game, which ended with a score of 87-63.

Senior guard Alyssa Strickland lead the team in points (20) and tied her season high while also posting another accolade in three-pointers made.

This was the first conference win for head coach Semeka Randall and the women's basketball team. This is also a season high for made three-pointers (11) for the women's basketball team and the first time they have made double digit three's as a team in one game in Bulldog Division I history.

The Maroon and White will be back in action Monday, January 13th vs Mississippi Valley University at 5:30 in T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
