Sippial’s Three Pointer Too Short as A&M Falls to Alcorn State

LORMAN, MS - Tierro Frost scored 20 points, including two free throws to put to the game out of reach, as Alcorn State defeated­ Alabama A&M, 63-60 on Monday night.
 
Brittany Strickland continued her scoring assault by leading the Bulldogs with 20 points. Senior forward Jasmine Sander posted 15 points while Taylor Sippal added 14 in the back and forth contest.
 
A&M led by as many as ten points in the first half by taking advantage of luke-warm shooting by the home team. The Lady Braves shot 11 of 25 (44 percent) from the field and was 0-2 from the free throw line compared to the Maroon & White's 9-15 for 60 percent.
 
After turning the ball over six times in the first half, AAMU settled down, turning the ball over just seven times in the second frame while scoring a total of 24 points off 13 Braves turnovers.
 
Alcorn's Angela Wilson-Reid hit a follow-up shot with 2:53 left to give the Lady Braves a four-point lead before Taylor Sippial came back with a pair of free throws with 1:49 to go. Sippial made the free throws with less than a minute in the game to tie the score at 59 all then give the Bulldogs their final lead of the game 60-59.  From there the ladies from "The Hill" was whistled for four fouls putting Alcorn on the line, which they took advantage hitting 4-8 in the last 1:49 of the contest.
 
The women's basketball team on "The Hill" won the fast break points battle 6-2, held the lead on five different occasions and scored the last field goal of the game.
 
Head coach Semeka Randall and her crew battled all night long on "The Reservation", shooting 43% from the field on 9 of 21 and was 85 percent from the charity stripe (17-20) all in the second half.  But home cooking and timely shots made allowed by the home team to take the battle Monday evening.
 
Wilson-Reid added 12 points and five rebounds for the Braves.
 
Each team recorded 24 rebounds.
 
Alabama A&M will return to Huntsville for just its third home league contest in the last five games when it hosts Texas Southern on Saturday, February 1, 4:00 p.m.
