Randall and company falls in conference opener

JACKSON, Miss.  – Taylor Sippial scored nine of her 16 points in the second half; however Alabama A&M was defeated by a score of 77-70 by Jackson State University on Saturday afternoon.
 
Brittney Strickland and Jasmine Sanders each scored 14 points, as AAMU lost its eight consecutive road game. AAMU falls to 2-9 and its first loss in league play.
 
The tempo was very slow in the first half. Strickland would hit the go head layup to give A&M a 25-22 lead with 1:41 left in the first. This gave the Maroon and White a 30-29 lead, their first and only in the opening half.  Ayanna Hardy Fuller gave the Tigers the lead going into the second when she hit a layup with 58 seconds remaining.
 
JSU used steady shooting and 15 off 33 from the field to maintain their lead to the tune of 45% compared to AAMU's 39%.  JSU also hit 16 free-throws out of 24 attempts all in the second half.
 
In the final 4:00 minutes of the game Jackson State did not attempt a field goal. A&M trimmed the Lady Tigers' lead on a layup by Sippial to cut it to 71-68.  JSU used time management and was able to get the final rebound to run the clock out.
 
Dominique Brothers made three 3-pointers and scored nine of her 15 points in the first half for Jackson State (3-8). The Lady Tigers shot 37 percent from behind the arc for the game compared to Alabama A&M's 26 percent (5-22)
 
Jackson State outscored A&M 40-38 in points in the paint, 27-23 in baskets off turnovers and 19-15 in fast break opportunities. The Bulldogs won the second chance point battle 23-18 and tied in the fast break point's battle 8-8.  
 
Up next, A&M will travel to Grambling, Louisiana to take on the Tigers of Grambling State on Monday, January 6; tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
