Texas Southern slips by A&M

Normal- After a close and aggressive basketball game the A&M women's basketball team was defeated by the Tigers of Texas Southern (66-61) Saturday afternoon at Elmore Gymnasium.

Saturday's game had an extreme fast-paced start. It was evident each team came into the contest determined to win. The score was tied at 10 by the first media timeout and the Maroon and White had already forced five turnovers. It was a close first half with neither team breaking away from the other. Play maintained the same trend for the remaining minutes. Both teams tried to increase their lead, but neither could break away.

By the end of the first half, the Bulldogs trailed the Lady Tigers (28-26).

Junior guard Taylor Sippial led the way offensively for A&M with nine points, followed by Jasmine Sanders who had seven.

The Lady Tigers came out of the halftime break with a renewed energy. Their offensive intensity skyrocketed with three consecutive baskets. In the first five minutes of play, despite the Bulldogs' efforts, the Tigers slowly started to pull away gaining a 10 point advantage. The Lady Bulldogs deployed a successful press defense that forced consecutive Tiger turnovers. By the second media timeout the Bulldogs started to regain momentum offensively and shortened the Tigers lead (49-45). Regrettably, toward the end of the second half, the Tigers outscored the Bulldogs causing an unfortunate ending to the game.

Jasmine Sanders who scored 18 led the scoring for the women's basketball team while Brittney Strickland and Taylor Sippial added 15 each.

Brianna Sidney paced TSU with 16 points while Sarah Williams added 10 and Keiana Vines scored 15 points and seven of eight shooting.

The Maroon & White will be back in action Monday, February 3^rd when they host Prairie View A&M at 5:00 p.m. in the Elmore Gymnasium.
