Winter & Utterback Carry A&M over Morehead State, 4-2

Box Score

NORMAL – Derrick Winter carried a no-hitter into the third inning, and Andrew Utterback collected two hits, including a home run, to help Alabama A&M (8-14) defeat Morehead State (8-11), 4-2, Tuesday afternoon at Bulldog Field.

Winter (1-2) earned his first win of the season by holding the Eagles to two runs and a pair of strikeouts in six innings.

Keyonta Welch led A&M with three hits while, Justen Folger, Patrick Dodson, Caleb Waddell and Jordan Friend each finished with a hit.  Morehead's offense was led by Nick Newell, who went 2-for-4.

Utterback's home run, his third of the year, came in his second at bat in the fourth inning after the Bulldogs tied the game one apiece. The Iowa native also tied the game in the bottom of the second, hitting a single and coming around to score on an RBI ground out by Dylan Johnson.

A&M's Waddell scored on a wild pitch in the fifth extending the lead 3 to 2.  In the bottom of the seventh Welch scored on an RBI single by Austin Hulsey for the insurance run.

Morehead got within two runs in the sixth after Brandon Rawe hit a double to lead off; went to third on a stolen base then scored on Alan Mocahbee's sacrifice fly.

Ramon Nelson and Dakota Smith both gave up a hit in relief of Winter. But it was Smith who recorded three groundouts to end the threat and retire the Eagles in order in the ninth inning.

The Bulldogs and Eagles will conclude the two game midweek series Wednesday afternoon at Bulldog field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
