Women's Basketball suffers set back vs. Jackson State

NORMAL – It was close but the size of Jackson State was a little too much to handle as the A&M women's basketball team fell Thursday night.

Jackson State entered the contest with a 10-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference record.

The Bulldogs came out with great intensity and determination. They fought the Lady Tigers throughout the game with neither team being able to break away from one another for most of the first half.

As time wound down, the Bulldogs slowly started to pull away. With four minutes left in the half, AAMU lead the Tigers by 10 with a score of 39-29. Throughout the half, the Maroon and White forced 10 Tiger turnovers. Despite A&M's intense defense, the Lady Tigers came back to decrease their deficit by four.

The Bulldogs lead the Lady Tigers 45-41 at the end of the first half. They shot for 55% on 16-29 field goals and 6-11 on three-pointers.
Brittney Strickland, who leads the team in scoring, with an average of 16.5 points per game booked 10 points by the first 10 minutes of the contest. Throughout the first Brittany managed to score 21 of the 43 Bulldog points. She was followed by Alyssa Strickland who managed seven points in the first 20.

The second half started off as the first left off, with a fired up Bulldog squad. For the first three minutes of the half, both teams remained scoreless. As time went on Jackson State started to increase their pressure on the Bulldogs. Eventually, the visiting team was able to regain the lead.

As the clock wound down, both coaches and fans were on their feet attempting to encourage their players to reach their fullest potential.

Despite the Bulldogs' best efforts, the Lady Tigers were able to maintain the lead for the win with a final score of 85-78.

Brittany Strickland ended the game scoring 26 points with six assists, five steals and three rebounds. She was followed by three fellow Bulldogs who also scored in double digits. Jasmine Sanders recorded a double-double booking 22 points and 10 rebounds while Alyssa Strickland scored 11 and Taylor Sippial added 10.

Ayanna Hardy-Fuller led JSU with a double-double scoring 23 points with 15 rebounds. She was followed by Ekwara Ndongo with 16 points.

The regular season finale is set for Saturday, March 8; with the tip set for 4 p.m. Grambling State will serve as the Bulldogs final opponent in Elmore gymnasium for the 2013-2014 season.
