Baseball Walks Off With 2-1 Series Win Over JSU

Box Score

NORMAL - Sophomore designated hitter Austin Hulsey plated the game-winning run with a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Alabama A&M University baseball team a 2-1series win over Jackson State on Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Field.

The Bulldogs have won nine of their past 14 Southwestern Athletic Conference games.

Junior left fielder Patrick Dodson went 2-for-5 on the day and Hulsey knocked in his 12th RBI in the past five games.

The top of the seventh saw Jackson State's Bryce Taylor walked to lead off then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. He then went home on a RBI double by Nick Marigny to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the eighth when Dodson singled scoring Jordan Friend.

"Normally when we are in tight situation I tell my guys not to panic and that the worst thing you can do is panic," commented head coach Mitch Hill.

Dodson advanced to first base with two outs in the bottom 10th, after his grounder to the Tigers right fielder was misplayed. Hulsey then delivered the walk-off base hit in the next at-bat to give AAMU its third consecutive win over JSU.

"I was looking for a curve ball and I kept fouling off the fast ball, and when he pitched that curve I got a good hit," said Hulsey.

Junior right-hander Devin Smith scattered two hits and one run across eight innings, and struck out five. He retired five consecutive batters in the first four frames and recorded four perfect innings.

JSU's Desmond Russell took the loss allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out five in nine-innings.

This is the first complete sweep over the Blue Tigers for A&M since the conference split into divisions in baseball.

A&M maintains their second spot in the Eastern Division of the league and moves two games ahead of the Tigers with a pair of SWAC series remaining on the schedule.

The Bulldogs will travel to Cookeville, Tennessee for a mid-week game against Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, April 15, at 6:00 p.m. Live stats will be available for fans that can't attend.
