Late Howard goal drops Lady Bulldogs

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. -- Fatmata Mansaray scored her first goal of the season but Howard University scored in the final seven minutes Friday for a 2-1 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

Mansaray's goal put A&M on top early in the match. She chipped the ball over the Bison goalkeeper at the 4:05 mark for the 1-0 lead.

However, Howard, the two-time defending SWAC champions, tied the match just two minutes later.

The teams battled back and forth with A&M (0-2 SWAC, 1-10 overall) getting several opportunities to take the lead.

The Lady Bulldogs outshot Howard 15-14 and had seven shots on goal to five for the Bison (5-3-2, 2-0-1). Mansaray and Estelle Esperance each had four shots, including two shots on goal.

It was the first time this season A&M had outshot and had more shots on goal than their opponent.

"Our ladies played very well getting an early lead in the game," said Head Coach Frank Davies. "We dominated the second half in possession and had our chances."

The Lady Bulldogs return to action Oct. 7 when Grambling State visits The Hill for a 1 p.m. match. They also host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Oct. 9 at 3 p.m.
