Bulldogs men's and women's track teams set tryouts

HUNTSVILLE -- If you believe you have what it requires to be an NCAA Division I track and field athlete or just love to run long distances, here's your chance.

The Alabama A&M  women's and men's track & field teams will host walk-on tryouts starting Aug. 22. The length of the tryout period will be determine by the coaching staff and relayed to all who show up for tryouts.

A walk-on meeting is set for 3 p.m. Aug. 22 in the Elmore Gym Lecture Hall. Attendance is mandatory.

Prospective student-athletes who pass the screening process will be notified that same date and the tryouts will begin Aug. 23 at the practice track.

Candidates must be cleared to compete at the NCAA Division I Track and Field level by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

To be eligible to try out as a walk-on student-athlete, a student must be a full-time student at Alabama A&M University and be enrolled in at least 12 hours of undergraduate work or nine hours of graduate work.

All student-athletes are required to have primary insurance coverage.

Other requirements are:

1. Freshmen: Meet NCAA initial eligibility standards. Visit www.eligibilitycenter.com for more details.

2. Sophomores: Have passed 24 hours.

3. Juniors: Have passed 48 degree applicable hours.

4. Your cumulative GPA must be at least a 2.0 and meet the percentage for degree requirement established by the NCAA.
