SWAC East Showdown: Bulldogs visit Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. -- The Bulldogs are on the road this weekend with a chance to make a move in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division.

Alabama A&M at 2-4 is in fifth place in the division, but the Bulldogs are just one game behind third-place Alcorn State with its 3-3 record.

The two teams will start their three-game series Friday at 6 p.m. at Alcorn State. The serious continues Saturday at 3 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.

Last weekend the Bulldogs dropped two of three at home against Mississippi Valley and the Braves lost two of three at Jackson State.

The Bulldogs will take the field with the league's top strikeout pitcher in Brandon Marsonek.

His 47 strikeouts lead the SWAC and are the 11th-most in the nation. The first team All-SWAC preseason pitcher has appeared in 17 games which is the most in NCAA Division I.

Marsonek, the current SWAC Pitcher of the Week, also leads the league with 20 batters struck out looking and 12 games finished.

When Caleb Gay takes the mound for Head Coach Mitch Hill, it will be his seventh start, which is the most in the nation heading into this weekend.

At the plate, the Bulldogs have players among the league's top 10 in several categories.

Cornelious Woods is seventh in the SWAC with a .359 batting average. 


Carson McGregory has 26 hits to rank fifth in the conference; his 95 plate appearances are eighth; and he is seventh with 85 at-bats


Zeth Malcom is tied for second with three home runs.


Joannes Diaz is second in the nation and leads the conference with seven sacrifice bunts.


Carlton Peppers is tied with McGregory with 95 plate appearances and he is eighth with 82 at-bats.


After this weekend, the Bulldogs are on the road at Morehead State for games Tuesday and Wednesday.

They return home next weekend to face Jackson State in a SWAC division series.
