Green wins bronze in 'bread-and-butter' 200 at War Eagle Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. -- Alabama A&M sprinter DeTorrian Green refers to the 200-meter as his "bread-and-butter" event and he impressed over the weekend, turning in a personal best and capturing the bronze medal at the War Eagle Invitational.

Green was clocked in 20.79, which is the second-fastest among SWAC sprinters this season.

"The meet overall was good for the men's team," he said. "We had (personal records) on the track as well as in the field. I felt my performance was nothing shorter then normal.

"I executed accordingly in the 200 meter dash which I refer to as my bread-and-butter race. Coach (LaShaunda) Jones always says being prepared, will bring good performance."

Green didn't qualify for the finals in the men's 100, though his time of 10.4 was a personal best and fourth-fastest in the SWAC.

"My 100-meter needs works but I am satisfied with my third 100 of the season being a 10.4," he said. "Looking forward to the Championship season."

Akeem Samuels placed sixth in the discus but his throw of 44.77 meters is the best in the SWAC this season.

"I am happy that I moved up in the ranks for our conference in the discus," he said. "However, I felt like my performance was missing execution.

"I believe that I need to focus more and get better to achieve my goals for this season."

Other top 10 finishes for the Bulldogs were: Alex Ward, 7th, 400 hurdles, 53.36; Tre' Williams, 8th, 400 hurdlers, 53.36; Ezekiel Rose, 9th, high jump, l.92 meters; 9th, javelin, 37.17m; Kessy Bell, 8th, shot put, 13.01m; 9th, hammer, 47.85m; Roderick Kirksey, 8th, javelin, 39.69; 4x100 (Octayvious Miles, Green, Charlie Parker, Joshua Napier), 8th, 41.08 seconds; 4x400 (Ward, Williams, Green, Devonte Nexby), 6th, 3:16.85.

"The coaching staff and team leaders would like to focus on all the positive outcome from Auburn  and capitalize on them to focus on even better results in a couple of weeks," Jones said. "In the next meet at the University of Memphis, we will focus on executing in the athletes' specific events to get them physically and mentally prepared for the SWAC Championship meet."
