TAMPA, Fla. | It doesn't matter if it is the indoor or outdoor season as
Laura Avila continued her path to breaking school records by shattering a 43-year-old record in the 5000m on Friday to highlight the opening day of the USF Alumni Invitational at USF Track and Field Stadium.
Avila, who holds the Alabama A&M indoor school records in the 3000m, 5000m and distance medley relay, won the event, posting a time of 17:48.56. Her time broke the previous mark of 18:14.33 held by Serene Mitchell in 1983. Avila's teammate,
Sanyae Gibson, claimed the second spot, with a time of 18:07.44.
In the women's 200m,
Laila Gaynor finished third, posting a time of 23.51 as Howard's Yahnari Lyons (23.11) and Diandrenique Gaines (23.30) were first and second, respectively.
On the men's side,
Justin Walker finished fifth in the long jump, recording a leap of 7.36m and Minnesota's Charles Godfred won the event at 7.80m.
