Alabama A&M Battles SWAC Leading Jackson State Before Dropping 6-2 Decision

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – Alabama A&M (1-10, 1-5 SWAC) would take the early lead before a five-run first set the tone for the rest of what would be a 6-2 loss at Jackson State (14-6, 9-1 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I baseball game on Sunday, March 28.

The Bulldogs would scratch an early run as junior outfielder Teddy Bridges (Montgomery, Ala.) walked to lead off the game and promptly stole second and advanced to third. Following a strikeout he would score on a groundout to second by freshman outfielder Janmikell Bastardo (Fort Myers, Fla.).

That 1-0 lead would not last, however, as JSU strung together five singles in the bottom of the inning to pull ahead 5-1. A walk, steal and an advance on a passed ball by senior shortstop Pierre Brewton (Madison, Ala.) in the third was followed by a single by freshman third baseman Jalen Ford (Birmingham, Ala.) to cut it to a three-run margin.

From there neither team could get anything going on a consistent basis at the plate as the score remained that way until the sixth inning when Chevy Dorris singled home Wesley Reyes from second to make it 6-2. The Bulldogs would then manage just one hit over the final three innings as Jackson State secured the four run win.

Ford and Bastardo would led A&M with an RBI apiece while Brewton was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk. Bridges added a run, steal and a pair of walks to round out the offense and junior pitcher Peyton Baker (Acworth, Ga.) went seven innings, allowing six runs, three earned, to suffer the loss to fall to 0-4.

Reyes and Chandler Dillard led the Tigers with 2-for-4 days that included an RBI apiece and two runs for Reyes. Dorris went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Chenar Brown had the other RBI. CJ Newsome was 2-for-5 and Equon Smith finished 2-for-4 with a run and a walk. Nikelle Galatas threw 7.1 innings and struck out nine while allowing just two earned runs to improve to 5-2.

Alabama A&M returns to action when they host rival Alabama State in a three-game set from April 1-3. Stay tuned to www.AAMUSports.com, the official online home of Bulldogs Athletics, for additional information on this series in the coming week.
