Alabama A&M Athletics Announces Four-Year Extension With Head Volleyball Coach Rose Magers-Powell

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks has announced that the Department has come to terms on a four-year extension with head volleyball coach and Huntsville native Rose Magers-Powell entering the 2021-22 season.

"We are ecstatic to have Coach Powell for many years to come," said Hicks. "She has continued to build upon a very successful program and is primed to take us to new heights with championship caliber teams."

Overall, since joining the program in May of 2014, Magers-Powell has compiled a 95-119 overall record while scheduling a challenging non-conference slate and has dominated Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, going an impressive 72-22 (.766) with just one season of more than three league losses.

That stretch has included consecutive 20-win seasons of 20-15 overall in 2019 with a 15-4 mark in the SWAC and 23-16 and 17-1 in 2018. Those performances resulted in back-to-back SWAC Regular Season Championships for the first time since the end of the 2000's and a berth in the league title game. The 2018 title represented the first regular season championship since the 2009 campaign.

Her six years have also resulted in a bevy of individual honors for Bulldog student-athletes, including 12 All-SWAC selections, nine of which have been on the First-Team. That group has included three Player of the Year selections as well as two each for Setter, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year.

On top of that, she has led A&M back to the postseason in three consecutive years, earning a berth in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) from 2017-19.

The extension comes as Magers-Powell prepares to enter her seventh season at the helm of the Bulldogs after having compiled a 373-305 record in a Hall of Fame career at Martin Methodist from 1996-2013. In that time she produced the 11th most wins of active coaching leaders at the NAIA level, was a three-time TranSouth Athletic Conference (TSAC) Coach of the Year and won three straight league titles from 2005-07.

Prior to her time with the Redhawks she produced a Hall of Fame playing career at the University of Houston, earning a spot on the Team USA Volleyball squad that that won the silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, which is still tied for the highest ever earned by the United States.

A pillar in the volleyball community, Magers-Powell also played and coached internationally for nine years in Japan, earning three Most Valuable Player awards in the process, and competed with the United States National Team for two years following college. In that time, she helped the USA win gold medals at the Pan American Games and NORCECA Games, a silver medal at the Super Three Tournament (China, Japan, USA) and a bronze medal at the World Championships.

Additionally, Magers-Powell was inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004, bringing her total such honors to three for a stellar coaching and playing career that has spanned decades.

"I am very pleased to have the opportunity to continue to build upon the success we have had in returning Alabama A&M women's volleyball to prominence," said Magers-Powell. "I would like to thank President Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr. and [Director of Athletics] Bryan Hicks for their confidence in me to continue to lead this program and to shape the lives of the young ladies that have chosen to be Bulldogs. It is not something that I take lightly and I look forward to paying off the faith they have shown in me over these next four years."
