HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – After a successful season, Alabama A&M junior forward
Jalen Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) has been named a BOXTOROW Division I First-Team All-American as announced by that organization on Wednesday, March 23. This follows his Second-Team honor from the 2020-21 season. Jalen is the second first-team and multi-time honoree.
Johnson was named to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) First-Team as well as to the All-Tournament Team following the Bulldogs reaching the semifinals for the first time since 2014.He was also named to the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List and earned NABC All-District First-Team Honors.
That comes following a year in which he earned SWAC Player of the Week on November 24 after delivering a career high of 30 points at 2021 American Athletic Conference (AAC) semifinalist Cincinnati and in which he averaged 15.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.0 steals and shot .468 from the field.
Over the course of the 2021-22 season he registered double-doubles seven times along with 17 games of 15 points or more. Johnson also produced 15 points and nine rebounds and played 35 minutes during AAMU's 61-56 SWAC Tournament quarterfinal victory over Florida A&M on March 10.
One day later he led Alabama A&M with 20 points and 11 boards while playing 36 minutes that almost led to an upset of the No. 1 seed Alcorn State before falling by a narrow 69-64 decision.
With the selection he is one of three from the SWAC to be selected for the honor. In the 14 years the
BOXTOROW men's basketball All- American team has existed Alabama A&M has earned six selections, two on the First-Team, and a pair of multi-time selections.
The latter is headlined by a First-Team honor by
Jalen Johnson in 2021-22, following a Second-Team selection a year before as well as
Ladarius Tabb being named to the First-Team in 2015-16 and the Second Team in 2014-15. Additionally, Nick West was selected to the Second-Team (2015-16) and Third Team (2014-15) the same years as
Tabb making for two seasons of multiple selections
