About The Game
A&M takes the field at Louis Crews for one of just four times during the 2022 campaign when they host first-time opponent Austin Peay on Saturday, September 17.
As is tradition, the home opener is also the Louis Crews Classic in honor of the Bulldogs legendary coach.
Crews coached Alabama A&M for 16 years from 1960-75, taking over for the legendary George H. Hobson, and compiling a program best 94 wins (94-52-3) with a .641 winning percentage that still ranks third all-time in Bulldog history. His 16 years at the helm equals Hobson in terms of the longest in program history.
In terms of date, it is the sixth latest home opener in the program's NCAA Division I history, not including the Spring 2021 campaign that did not see a home game. It is the latest home opener since a 30-13 victory over Texas Southern on September 23, 2017 and represents the fourth time in that span that the Bulldogs have opened at home on September 17. That latest true home opener came on October 4, 2014 in a 38-28 loss to Grambling.
Series History vs. Austin Peay
Comes into being on September 17, 2022 following the first game between the two programs.
Series Flashback
Is on hold until meeting number two down the road with this being the first ever meeting.
From Head Coach Connell Maynor
"This will be our first time ever playing Austin Peay and it's our home opener and the Louis Crews Classic. They are a playoff team so this game will let us know where we stand among FCS football power to be. It's a great opportunity to show we can play with playoff teams and we look forward to the challenge."
