Alabama A&M Set To Host Austin Peay In Whiteout In First Ever Meeting In Louis Crews Classic

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – After taking on a pair of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents to open the season Alabama A&M (0-2, 0-0 SWAC) football will return home for a first-ever meeting with Austin Peay (2-1, 0-0 ASUN) on Saturday, September 17. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Louis Crews Stadium.

WHERE TO WATCH
Home Sweet Home means a return to the dulcet tones of Ted Dixie on air for the Bulldog Sports Network. Fans can also follow all the action through live stats and catch full coverage following the game on www.AAMUSports.com, the official online home of Alabama A&M Athletics.

HANGING WITH THE BIG(GER) BOYS
For 29 minutes and 22 seconds, the Bulldogs had FBS member Troy on the ropes as they took and defended a 3-0 lead until just before the half.

Freshman kicker Zach Alvarez (Hialeah, Fla.) banged through a 47-yarder with 3:37 left in the first quarter and the defense would make it stand up for more than a quarter. Contributing significantly to that effort was safety Moses Douglass (Springfield, Ohio) who picked off a pass on the Trojans ensuing possession and junior linebacker Thomas Douglass (Milledgeville, Ga.) – no relation – strip sacked Gunnar Wilson and senior defensive tackle Jamal Irby (Mobile, Ala.) recovered the fumble.

The defense would continue to capitalize as Troy had a bad snap on what would have been a tying field goal attempt on their next possession and sophomore safety Charles Bell VI (Germantown, Md.) took down the would-be runner nine yards deep in the backfield.

From there, however, the Trojans managed a go-ahead touchdown with 38 seconds left in the clock and then scored on their first two possessions of the second half to go up 21-3 less than five minutes in. A&M would add a pair of touchdowns late in what would end up being a 38-17 decision.

FALL IS HERE BUT WATCH OUT FOR EARLY WHITEOUT CONDITIONS
The temperature is changing, the leaves will be changing – and Louis Crews will be hit with whiteout conditions. All fans are encouraged to wear white and blanket the stadium in a whiteout for the Bulldogs home opener.

EDUCATOR APPRECIATION DAY
In recognition of those individuals who work tirelessly to teach young people and mold them into productive young adults, Alabama A&M Athletics is presenting these individuals with the opportunity to purchase up to five tickets for just five dollars. All purchases must be made at the Louis Crews Stadium Ticket Office.

THE LOUIS CREWS CLASSIC
In celebration and remembrance of the most successful coach in Alabama A&M football history, each season the University hosts the Louis Crews Classic in the first home game of the year. Crews, a native of Bessemer, Ala., amassed a 110-61-3 record during his storied tenure on The Hill. While the record is impressive, the lasting impact that he made as a mentor and leader for his players and the university is what defines his legacy.

During a coaching career that spanned from 1959-76 with the Bulldogs, Crews received numerous awards, including being voted as an Outstanding Citizen of Huntsville and receiving a citation from the governor for his contributions to the State of Alabama.

In recognition of all that he and his family contributed to the institution, A&M announced the creation of the Annual Louis Crews Classic in 2010. Since that time the Bulldogs have posted an 8-3 record, including four wins against traditional rival Tuskegee.

RACKING UP THE HONORS (SEASON EDITION)
While more than half the roster is new the returnees are well known and have racked up the preseason recognition.

That started with three All-SWAC Preseason selections as senior running back Gary Quarles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and senior wide receiver Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim (Miramar, Fla.) earned Second-Team while junior offensive lineman Carson Vinson (Cary, N.C.) was selected to the Second-Team.

Quarles and Ibrahim would add to the mantle with the latter picking up Stats Perform FCS Preseason Third-Team All-American honors while both he and the diminutive tailback were named to the BOXTOROW Preseason All-American Team.

Ibrahim is also now a 10-time All-American following his most recent honor, a Second-Team selection by Hero Sports and both he and Quarles have been named to the prestigious Deacon Jones Award Watch list representing the top player from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

MORE THAN 70-PERCENT OF A SEASON IN THE SPOTLIGHT
The Bulldogs are a popular choice to hit the airwaves in 2022 as more than 70-percent of their season will be on national television.

In an 11-game schedule, A&M will be featured six times by traditional networks, beginning with CBS Sports Network carrying the season-opening UAB contest. Also being picked up will be Troy (ESPN3), Florida A&M (ESPN+), Alabama State (ESPN Networks), Mississippi Valley State (ESPNU) and Jackson State (ESPN+).

That slate plays to the fan that can't get to all the road games as every single one of those six games are on the road. A&M will also see a pair of home games aired on the new endeavor that is HBCUGo, with those being the October 8 game against Grambling and the regular season finale with Texas Southern on November 19.

ABOUT THE AUSTIN PEAY UNIVERSITY GOVERNORS
The Governors are off to a strong start following a 38-27 loss at FBS foe Western Kentucky on August 27. Since that time they have not allowed a point, shutting out Presbyterian (9/3) a whopping 63-0 and blanking Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Mississippi Valley State (9/10) 41-0 in their most recent outing. For those doing the math, that is 104-0 in their last two games.
