HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M track and field programs will head to Birmingham later in the week to compete in the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, held this Thursday and Friday, February 16-17 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Talil Atkins (Baltimore, Md.) and
Eric Brannon (Long Beach, Calif.) hold top marks in three events on the men's side, including Atkins running times of 7.02 seconds in the 60-meter, 22.00 seconds in the 200-meter, and 48.76 seconds to win the 400-meter in the BSC Indoor Icebreaker (Dec. 2).
Brannon leads the team with marks of 1:58.85 in the 800-meter, 2:40.71 in the 1000-meter, and 4:34.56 in the mile run. Meanwhile, fellow freshmen
Kody Pugh (Greyson, Ala.) and
Lawrence Armstead (Loganville, Ga.) lead there events so far with times of 1:07.21 and 1:24.28 in the 500 and 600-meter events respectively.
Shawn Guerrier (Miami, Fla.) owns the top spot in the 300-meter at 35.69 seconds, followed by
Brandon McLaren (Hanover, Jamaica) who has a season-best time of 8.27 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.
Lance Powell (Nashville, Tenn.) has been the best jumper for A&M this season, leading in the long jump and triple jump at 6.9 and 13.93 meters respectively, while
Isaiah McCaulley (Huntsville, Ala.) leads in the weight throw with a 16.0-meter distance.
Sophomore
Victoya Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) leads a trio of events on the women's side, including the 60 (7.49s), 200 (24.97s), and 300-meter (41.29s), followed by fellow sophomore
De'Ajene Johnson (Detroit, Mich.) in the lead currently in the 600-meter run at 1:44:54.
Meanwhile, freshman
Laila Gaynor (Baltimore, Md.) owns the top marks so far with times of 55.88 and 1:15.98 in the 400 and 500-meter events respectively, while
Aneisha Ingram (St. Anne, Jamaica) continues to be their leader in long distance, holding top team marks in the 800-meter (2:21.41), and 1000-meter (3:09.09), and mile events (5:21.53).
Freshmen lead the Bulldogs in hurdles and jumps, with
Shakiera Woods (Atlanta, Ga.) holding the top time in the 60-meter hurdles (8.99), followed by
Ta'Nya Burnett (West Memphis, Ark.) and
Amber Jamison (Atlanta, Ga.) having distances of 5.23 meters and 11.25 meters in the long jump and triple jump.
Finally,
Briana Cox (Miami, Fla.) holds the personal best this year in the shot put 10.75m, while
Niasija Wright (Lithonia, Ga.) leads in the weight throw at 13.24m.
Tickets for the SWAC Championships can be purchased online, with $5 general admission tickets along with parking costs, however children ages five and under are free.
