BIRMINGHAM, Ala. __ Sophomore
Ajanae Cressey (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the women's side in multiple events, helping them finish day one with 14 points, good for third place in the standings with another day to go at the SWAC Indoor Track Championships, held inside of the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The women's distance medley unit of
Kendyl Hawkins (Florence, Ala.),
Aneisha Ingram (St. Anne, Jamaica),
De'Ajene Johnson (Detroit, Mich.), and
Taylor Wingo (D'Iberville, Miss.) got off to a strong start for the Bulldogs, running a time of 12:36.71, trailing only Alabama State who finished in 12:16.41.
Cressey took lead in the individual events, taking first place in the high jump event with a distance of 1.61 meters and finished third in the 800-meter pentathon at 2:41.21.
Later on, she also placed in the shot-put event with a throw of 9.06 meters (5th), long jump at 5.10 meters (6th), and the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.55s (8th) to push her team to third, trailing Prairie View (36 points) and Alabama State (25 points) after day one.
The men only took part in the distance medley on day one, with the squad consisting of
Lawrence Armstead (Loganville, Ga.),
Eric Brannon (Long Beach, Calif.),
Kyle Graham (Mobile, Ala.), and
Leslie Jones (Pleasanton, Calif.) finished with a time of a 10:49.81, good for seventh in the event and eight on the day.
The meet will continue for both sides tomorrow, with a majority of running events to start the morning. Friday's running events will feature timed finals with the women's and men's 4 X 400 meter relays set to conclude the championships at 3:20 pm and 3:35 pm CST respectively.
