AAMU Drops Doubleheader at UAPB

PINE BLUFF, Ark. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team dropped a doubleheader on Sunday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, falling 10-6 in the opener and dropping the second game, 8-0, at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
 
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-1) won the series on Sunday after Alabama A&M (1-2) took the series opener on Friday.
 
GAME 1 - HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama A&M used a five-run third inning to grab a 5-0 lead.
 
Dre Amaral opened the frame with a single to left and moved to second when Brycen Hammonds drew a walk. Alex Diaz reached on a fielder's choice as Amaral moved to third and Hammonds was out at second.
 
With one down, Jared Tribbett reached on a fielder's choice as Amaral scored. Diaz came across on a wild pitch and after a walk to Zak Rice, Blake Martin singled to left, platting Tribett. Chevalier Dorris followed and drove in Rice with a base hit as Martin was out at second. Christon Soto singled to left as Dorris stopped at third. Kylan Duncan and Amaral drew back-to-back walks as Dorris scored, giving AAMU the 5-0 lead.
 
However, Arkansas-Pine Bluff closed the gap to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of third.
 
The Bulldogs got a run back in the fourth, but couldn't not hold off the Golden Lions, who plated four runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and one more in the eighth for a 10-6 victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with six runs on eight hits and left eight on base
  • Alex Diaz and Chevalier Dorris each went 2-for-4
  • Anthony Mateo started on the hill, going 5.2 innings. He surrendered six runs on seven hits, with four strikeouts and two walks
  • Ryan Jones, Charlie Lazo (0-1) and Dustin Hernandez worked in relief
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff finished with 10 runs on 11 hits, committed three errors and stranded 10 base runners
  • JaKobi Jackson, Brandon Simon, Donovan Noble and Edwin DeLaCruz each collected two hits
  • Brett Kennett started for UAPB, going 2.2 innings as he surrendered five runs (one earned) on five hits, walked six and struck out one
  • Jaxon Lucas (1-0) earned the win in relief and Ben VanMaanen picked up the save
 
GAME 2 - HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first three innings, the Golden Lions got into the scoring column with five runs in the fourth.
 
Arkansas-Pine Bluff completed the scoring in the seventh with three more runs for the 8-0 lead.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with eight hits and stranded eight on base
  • Alex Diaz went 2-for-3 and Jared Tribett was 2-for-4
  • Jackson Hall (0-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs (three earned) on seven hits, with three walks and a pair of strikeouts in four innings
  • Trey Scott and Brett Parker saw action in relief
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff finished with eight runs on 12 hits, committed one error and left 13 on base
  • Donovan Noble, Edwin DeLaCruz, Jalyn Williams and Jaylon Nauden each collected two hits
  • Jaedon Willis started on the hill, lasting four innings as he fanned four, gave up three hits and walked one
  • Jacob Ehling earned the win in five innings in relief as he scattered five hits, struckout five and walked one
UP NEXT  
Alabama A&M will have its 2024 home opener on Tuesday against Tennessee Tech. First pitch at the Bulldog Baseball Field is set for 1 p.m.
