Late Rally Falls Short in Final Game vs. Butler

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning trailing by six runs but could not get a timely hit in a 7-2 loss in the series final to Butler on Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Field.
 
Alabama A&M (1-6) outhit Butler, 7-6, and got more than six innings on the mound by Jackson Hall in the loss.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Butler broke the tie with one run in the second and added two more in the fifth for a 3-0 lead.
 
Alabama A&M got on the board in the bottom of the fifth.
 
With one down, Dre Amaral walked and advanced to second on a Brycen Hammonds base hit to center. Tristan Curless followed with an RBI single to left, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Jared Tribett walked to load the bases but Butler starting pitcher Grant Brooks got a strike out and a fielder's choice to end the inning.  
 
Butler pushed the lead to 7-1 with one run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
 
AAMU tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Kylan Duncan opened the frame by being hit by a pitch and with one out, Hammonds singled to right. Curless reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Tribett followed and singled through the left side as Duncan scored. However, Blake Martin and Zak Rice struck out to end the game.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with two runs on seven hits, committed one error and left 12 on base
  • Brycen Hammonds and Tristan Curless each went 2-for-5
  • Jackson Hall (0-2) took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits, walked four and fanned three in 6.1 innings
  • Trey Scott and Dustin Hernandez pitched in relief.
  • Butler finished with seven runs on six hits and stranded seven on base
  • Grant Brooks (1-0) earned the win in four innings, striking out four and walking one
UP NEXT  
Alabama A&M concludes its five-game homestand on Tuesday against Stillman. First pitch against the Tigers is set for 1 p.m. from Bulldog Field.
