Bulldogs Open SWAC Play Against Florida A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team opened Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on Saturday with a pair of losses to Florida A&M, falling 11-1 in eight innings in the opener and closing out the day with a 13-7 defeat at the Bulldog Baseball Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 1
Alabama A&M (2-15 overall, 0-2 SWAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Chevalier Dorris scored on a Jared Tribett ground out.
 
However, Florida A&M (7-12, 2-0), which belted six homers, plated two runs in the third, one in the fifth, two more in the sixth, one in the seventh and exploded for five runs in the eighth to pick up the 11-1 win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with one run on four hits, committed two errors and stranded two on base
  • Tristan Curless, Tribett, Brycen Hammonds and Jesus Riera collected one hit
  • Anthony Mateo (0-4) took the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits, with one strikeout
  • Evan Hurlburt worked in relief
  • Florida A&M finished with 11 runs on 14 hits and left seven on base
  • Ty Jackson went 3-for-4, with four RBI and two runs scored
  • Stephen Greico collected two hits and drove in three
  • Ben Kim went 1-for-3 with, two runs scored and two RBI
  • Caleb Granger (3-1) pitched eight innings to earn the win as he gave up one run on four hits, fanned six and walked one 
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 2
In the nightcap, the Rattlers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, but AAMU answered in the bottom of the inning on a Riera two-run homer, closing the gap to 3-2.
 
Florida A&M plated two more runs in the third, but again Alabama A&M kept it close in the bottom of the frame as Zak Rice brought Tribett across on a sacrifice fly to right.
 
The Rattlers exploded for six runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 11-3.
 
The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 11-5 with a pair of runs in the fifth and both teams plated runs in the ninth as Florida A&M completed the doubleheader sweep with a 13-7 victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with seven runs on 10 hits, committed one error and left seven on base
  • Tribett went 2-for-4, with three RBI and two runs scored
  • Riera was 3-for-4, with a pair of RBI and one run scored
  • Curless collected a pair of hits and Zak Rice drove in two
  • Ryan Jones (0-1) pitched 3.1 innings to take the loss as he gave up six runs on seven hits, with a pair of walks
  • Dustin Hernandez and Charlie Lazo worked in relief
  • Florida A&M finished with 13 runs on 15 hits, had two errors and stranded 11 on base
  • Tru Fontenot went 1-for-3, with four RBI and two runs scored 
  • Greico paced the offense, going 4-for-6, with three runs driven in and three runs scored
  • Tre Simmons started for the Rattlers, surrendering three runs on four hits, walked four and struck out three in 2.1 innings
  • Andrew Ginther (1-1) and Cody Williams pitched in relief
