MONTGOMERY, Ala. | KJ Stanfield belted a two-run homer in the second inning, giving the Alabama A&M University baseball team an early lead, but the Bulldogs could not hold on in a 3-2 loss to Alabama State in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series opener on Friday night at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Alabama A&M (2-18 overall, 0-4 SWAC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top half of the second inning.
Miles Jackson opened the frame with a double down the line in left and scored on a one-out homer to left by Stanfield.
Alabama State (9-10, 1-2) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Jack Hay, who reached on a leadoff single, scored on a Christian Lopez base hit to right, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Hornets grabbed a 3-2 advantage with a pair of runs in the sixth.
With one down in the frame, Jamal George singled to left and advanced to second on a walk to Hay. Both runners scored when Randy Flores singled up the middle.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with two runs on four hits and stranded nine on base
- Miles Jackson, Brycen Hammonds, KJ Stanfield and Jesus Riera collected one hit each
- Anthony Mateo (0-5) took the loss, surrendering three runs on eight hits, with three strikeouts and one walk in seven innings
- Evan Hurlburt worked the eighth inning in relief
- Alabama State finished with three runs on eight hits and left four on base
- Jamal George and Devin Chandler each went 2-for-3
- Luis Rodriguez 1-3 gave up two runs on three hits, fanned 10 and walked six in six innings to earn the win
- Wilfredo Morales, Caio Araujo and Kyler McIntosh pitched in relief
