HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University softball team finally had its 2024 home opener on Saturday as the Bulldogs began Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play with a 12-1 and 6-3 loss to Florida A&M.
Alabama A&M (4-10 overall, 0-2 SWAC) fell in five innings in the opener and had an opportunity in the bottom of the seventh in the second game, but could not get a timely hit in the doubleheader loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 1
Florida A&M (6-13, 2-0) picked up a run in the second, added three more in the fourth, before exploding for eighth in the fifth.
Alabama A&M grabbed a run back in the bottom of the fifth in falling 12-1.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with one run on two hits, with four errors
- Tori Green and Iyanna Canada collected one hit each
- Paige Scott took the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits, with four strikeouts and one walk
- Florida A&M finished with 12 runs on 11 hits, with one error
- Samantha Smith earned the victory, giving up one run on two hits, fanning six and walking two in five innings
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 2
The Rattlers grabbed a run in the top of the first, but the Bulldogs answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead.
Canada opened the inning with a single to left and moved to third on a ground out by
Serena Herbranson.
Faith Cross reached on an error and
Tori Green brought Canada across on a ground out.
Zahria Jones plated Cross with a single to right.
Florida A&M responded with three runs in the fourth and two more in the seventh for a 6-2 lead.
Alabama A&M pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with three runs on six hits, had four errors and stranded five on base
- Tori Green went 1-for-3, with a pair of RBI
- Cris'Deona Beasley took the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits, with four strikeouts and two walks in seven innings
- Florida A&M finished with six runs on nine hits, committed a pair of errors and left 10 on base
- Zoryana Hughes picked up the win in seven innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits, with five strikeouts and a pair of walks
