JACKSON, Miss. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team jumped out to a six-run lead through two innings but couldn't hold on as Jackson State rallied and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth when Robert Tate Jr. was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the walk-off, 9-8, victory in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Sunday at Braddy Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama A&M (6-28 overall, 4-11 SWAC) opened the scoring in the top of the first on a solo homer by
Brycen Hammonds, giving the Bulldogs a quick 1-0 lead.
AAMU extended the lead in the second with five runs on four hits.
Miles Jackson began the inning with a solo shot to left.
Blake Martin and
Jared Tribett drew back-to-back walks and
Chevalier Dorris reached on a bunt single to load the bases.
Dre Amaral followed with a single through the left side as Martin and Tribett scored. Hammonds brought Dorris and Amaral across with a base hit to left as Alabama A&M stretched its lead to 6-0.
Jackson State (23-11, 8-6) got a run back in the bottom of the third, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
The Tigers continued to chip away at AAMU's lead with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, before grabbing an 8-6 lead with four runs in the sixth.
Alabama A&M answered in the top of the seven as
Tristan Curless belted a solo homer to begin the inning and Tribett scored
Zak Rice, who was hit by a pitch, on a sacrifice fly to right, tying the game at 8.
However, the Tigers loaded the bases in the ninth and scored the game-winning run when Robert Tate Jr. was hit by a pitch.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with eight runs on nine hits, committed two errors and stranded 11 on base
- Bryce Hammonds went 2-for-5, with one homer, three RBI and one run scored
- Miles Jackson went 2-for-3, with one home run, one walk, one RBI and one run scored
- Dre Amaral went 2-for-6, with one run scored and one RBI
- Gabe Nicholson started and did not figure into the decision as he gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits, fanned three and walked one in 5.1 innings
- Dustin Hernandez (0-3) took the loss, giving up one unearned run on one hit, walked one in 2.2 innings of relief
- Jackson State finished with nine runs on 12 hits, had three errors and left nine on base
- Jordan McCladdie went 3-for-5, with two RBI and two runs scored
- Myles White went 2-for-3, with one double, two RBI and one run scored
- Erick Gonzalez started for the Tigers, giving up eight runs on nine hits, struck out five and walked four in six innings
- Christian Womble (3-2) earned the win, fanning three and walking three in three innings

Alabama A&M returns home for its mid-week game against Faulkner on Tuesday. First pitch against the Eagles is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Bulldog Baseball Field.
