NEW ORLEANS, La. | Sofia Sotelo Raya rallied from one set down as her third-set victory sent the Alabama A&M University women's tennis team into the Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament semifinals with a 4-3 victory over Southern on Friday morning at the City Park Tennis Center.
Alabama A&M, the No. 6 seed, advances to Saturday's SWAC Women's Tournament semifinals and will meet top seed Florida A&M at 9 a.m. Southern concludes its season at 7-10.
Alabama A&M (7-14) claimed the doubles point by picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
The team of
Gabrielle Henderson and Arianda Ondo Cerezo defeated Paris Washington and Kai Wince, 7-6, at No. 1, while at No. 2,
Alicia Owegi and Ntokozo Zungo outlasted Baluck Deang and Shahd Habib, 7-6.
Southern earned singles wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4, but the Bulldogs got victories at No. 2 and No. 5, tying the match at 3.
At No. 2, Cerezo defeated Wince, 6-0, 6-4, while
Hannah Nagpall beat Deang, 6-1, 6-2.
With the match all tied, Raya fell behind in the opening set, 6-3, to Latesha Grant. However, Raya won the second set, 7-5, before picking up a 6-3 win in the third set to seal the victory.
