Alabama A&M Drops Pair on Senior Day

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University softball team concludes its home campaign on Saturday afternoon and saw its Senior Day spoiled as the Bulldogs dropped a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) doubleheader to Jackson State, 11-3, and 9-5, at the Bulldog Softball Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 1
Jackson State (27-14 overall, 14-6 SWAC) raced out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the first inning and added one run in the second, third and fourth innings for a 7-0 lead.
 
Alabama A&M (8-24, 4-16) picked up a run in the fifth when Catherine Hickey doubled to right center, scoring Madison Murray as the Bulldogs closed the gap to 7-1. 
 
The Tigers plated four runs in the top of the seventh for an 11-1 advantage.
 
The Bulldogs got an RBI double by Hickey and Kaidence Swoops in the bottom of the frame, but it wasn't enough an 11-3 loss.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with three runs on eight hits, committed five errors and left six on base
  • Catherine Hickey went 2-for-3, with two RBI and one run scored
  • Sydney Hall (0-8) took the loss, giving up six runs on six hits, with three walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings
  • Paige Scott worked the final 4.2 innings in relief
  • Jackson State finished with 11 runs on nine hits and stranded eight on base
  • Ka'Liyah Gipson went 3-for-5, with three runs driven in and two runs scored
  • Sofia Gonzalez (5-5) earned the complete-game win, surrendering three runs on eight hits, fanning three and walking one
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 2
Much like the opener, Jackson State jumped out to a big lead, scoring five runs in the first inning and two more in the second for a 7-0 lead.
 
Alabama A&M got a run back in the third when Faith Cross singled through the right side, plating Dakota Daniel as the Bulldogs trailed, 7-1, after three innings. 
 
The Tigers plated two runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 9-1.
 
However, Alabama A&M responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs on four hits.
 
Daniel, who came into the weekend seventh in the nation in batting averaging, opened the frame with an infield hit. After a stolen base, Daniel scored on an Allyson Riches base hit to right. Cross reached on a one-out infield hit as Riches scored. After Cross stole second, she scored on a Katie Puckett single up the middle as AAMU trimmed the deficit to 9-4. 
 
The Bulldogs picked up one more run, a Murray double to left center, scoring Daniel, in the sixth, but could not get any closer.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with five runs on nine hits, committed four errors and left eight on base
  • Dakota Daniel went 3-for-4, with three runs scored
  • Faith Cross went 2-for-4, with two RBI and one run scored
  • Katie Puckett went 2-for-4, with one RBI
  • Cris'Deona Beasley (5-9) surrendered five runs (four earned) on four hits, with one walk to take the loss
  • Timarian Tinsley, Paige Scott and Krista Sikes pitched in relief
  • Jackson State finished with nine runs on 13 hits, had one error and stranded eight on base
  • Mari Stephens went 2-for-5, with a pair of runs scored
  • Ka'Liyah Gipson went 2-for-4, with two runs scored and one RBI
  • Jace Jackson went 2-for-4, with a pair of RBI and one run scored
  • Jalia Hubbard also collected two hits and two RBI
  • Kelley Bickers (5-1) earned the win, giving up four runs on seven hits, with two walks and one strikeout in 4.1 innings
  • Victoria Salazar worked the final 2.2 innings in relieft 
UP NEXT  
Alabama A&M concludes the season with one final SWAC road trip, starting on Friday in Tallahassee, Fla. against Florida A&M. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Veronica wiggins Field at University Softball Complex.
