HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team could not overcome a six-run eighth inning as Mississippi Valley State picked up a 14-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory on Saturday at the Bulldog Baseball Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first three innings, Mississippi Valley State (9-17 overall, 1-8 SWAC) broke into the scoring column in the fourth with three runs to grab a 3-0 lead.
However, Alabama A&M trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
With two outs,
Miles Jackson doubled down the line in left and scored on a
Jesus Riera single to right center.
Zak Rice followed and reached on a throwing error as Riera scored.
The Delta Devils picked up a run in the top of the fifth, but the Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the frame at 4.
Angel Rivera struck out but reached first on a wild pitch.
Chevalier Dorris reached on an infield hit and both runners advanced a base on a
Dre Amaral ground out. With two outs, Curless singled through the right side as Rivera and Dorris scored as AAMU tied the game at 4.
MVSU plated one in the sixth and one more in the seventh for a 6-4 advantage.
Alabama A&M (4-25, 2-9) responded with three runs on three hits and took advantage of an error to grab a 7-6 lead.
However, Mississippi Valley State used a six-run eighth and added two more in the ninth before sealing the 14-8 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with eight runs on 10 hits, with five errors and stranded eight on base
- Tristan Curless, Miles Jackson, Jesus Riera and Chevalier Dorris each collected two hits
- Ryan Jones pitched four innings and gave up three runs on six hits, with three strikeouts and one walk
- Evan Hurlburt (1-1) and Kobe Stokes pitched in relief
- Mississippi Valley State finished with 14 runs on 16 hits, had four errors and left 11 on base
- Armanda Sierra went 6.1 innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits, with four strikeouts and two walks
- Brayden Eftink (1-0) earned the win in relief
