HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Chevalier Dorris belted a grand slam in the fourth inning but it wasn't enough as Alabama State won the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) rubber game on Monday afternoon, 20-9 in eight innings, at the Bulldog Baseball Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama State (24-22 overall, 15-9 SWAC) opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning but Alabama A&M (12-34, 8-16) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a 2-1 advantage.
Back came the Hornets in the third with three runs and two more in the fourth for a 6-2 lead.
Alabama A&M struck for six runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Jared Tribett and
Zak Rice drew back-to-back walks to open the inning.
Jesus Riera reached on a fielder's choice as Tribett was out at third and
Brandon Edwards, who pinch ran for Rice, advanced to second.
Miles Jackson followed with a single to left center as Edwards scored and Riera stopped a second.
Blake Martin drew a walk to load the bases. After a pitching change, Dorris unloaded a shot to deep right for a grand slam homer.
The Bulldogs weren't done in the inning as
Dre Amaral followed with a single through the right side and
Brycen Hammonds was hit by a pitch. With two down, Tribett singled through the right side as Amaral scored, giving Alabama A&M an 8-6 lead.
Alabama State used a seven-run sixth inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Yeriel Pastrana, as the Hornets took a 13-8 advantage.
ASU plated two more in the seventh and five in the eighth for a 20-8 lead.
The Bulldogs closed the gap to 20-9 with a run in the bottom of the frame, but it wasn't enough.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with nine runs on 10 hits, with five errors and stranded nine on base
- Jared Tribett went 3-for-4, with one walk and four RBI
- Dre Amaral and Jesus Riera each collected two hits
- Gabe Nicholson started as surrendered six runs (four earned) on nine hits, with two strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings
- Trey Scott, Charlie Lazo (1-3) and Kobe Stokes pitched in relief
- Alabama State finished with 20 runs on 20 hits and left 10 on base
- Randy Flores went 4-for-5, with four runs scored
- Yeriel Pastrana went 4-for-6, with six RBI and two runs scored
- Ali LaPread, Juan Cruz, Jack Hay, Kyler McIntosh and Cristian Lopez each collected two hits
- Alex Burden gave up six runs on two hits, walked six and struck out two in 3.1 innings
- Jafet Martinez and Will Smith (1-1) worked in relief

Alabama A&M returns to action for its final SWAC road swing on Friday, May 10 against Mississippi Valley State. First pitch against the Delta Devils is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Magnolia Field in Itta Bena, Miss.
