LIMA, Peru | Alabama A&M University freshman Ana-Liese Torian, representing the United States, got out of the blocks slowly in her heat at the U20 World Championships on Thursday morning and could not recover as she finished 26^th overall and did not qualify for the semifinals at the Estadio Atletico de la Viden.
 
Torian, the top U20 United States hurdler in the 100m, had spent all summer working on the start of races but on Thursday during cloudy conditions, got off to a slow start. As she battled back, she clipped one of the hurdles which hampered her finish as she clocked a time of 13.95 to finish third in the heat.
 
Alina Kyshkina, of the Urkraine, won the heat with a personal-best time of 13.37, while Great Britian's Thea Brown claimed second at 13.64.
 
The first two finishers in their respective heats, along with the eight fastest times, qualified for the semifinals.
 
Torian advanced to the U20 World Championships after winning the United States Track & Field Association (USTFA) U20 Championships in Eugene, Ore., in June, logging a time of 13.12.
 
The Homewood, Ill. native has already had an amazing first season, where she set two Alabama A&M school records. She posted a personal-best time of 8.35 in the 60m during the indoor season and set another mark during the outdoor slate, with a personal-best time of 12.99.
