VERO BEACH, Fla. | Trey Rutledge and
Desmore Joseph each collected a pair of hits, and the Alabama A&M University baseball team used a four-run third inning and held off a potential late rally in defeating Prairie View A&M, 7-4, during the opening game of the 2025 Andre Dawson Classic at Holman Stadium at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama A&M (2-3) played a run in the top half of the second inning to grab a 1-0 lead.
Angel Rivera opened the frame with a walk and moved to second on a Joseph base hit to center. After a ground out moved the runners up a base, Rivera scored a
Charles Morris sacrifice fly to center.
The Bulldogs added to the lead in the top of the third.
Rutledge began the inning by reaching on an error by the left fielder and advanced to third on the play. With one down,
Kylan Duncan singled to right, scoring Rutledge from third. After a stolen base by Duncan,
Brycen Hammonds reached on an infield hit to put runners on the corners. Rivera followed with a double as Duncan scores and Hammonds stopped at third. Joseph brought in Hammonds and Rivera with a single to center as the Bulldogs extended their lead to 5-0.
Prairie View A&M (2-3) answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and one more in the fifth, closing the gap to 5-4.
AAMU got some breathing room in the top of the seventh.
With one out in the frame, Hammonds walked, before second and third. Hammonds scored on a wild pitch and Joseph was intentionally walked. Joseph stole second before scoring on a
Wilmer Cuevas single to right as Alabama A&M increased the advantage to 7-4.
The Panthers had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners on second and third with two outs. However, Mac Bowie bounced out to the second baseman to end the game and halt the potential late-game rally.
