THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University softball team dropped a pair of games to the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Katie Puckett sent a ball deep into center field for her second home run of the season.
The opening contest started slow, with neither team scoring in the first four innings. At the top of the fifth, with runners on second and third base, Oakland's Madi Herrington tripled to bring in two runs. Alyssa Balcom singled to third base, allowing Herrington to score and the Golden Grizzlies to take a 3-0 lead.
The contest ran stagnant until the bottom of the seventh when Puckett recorded a solo home run to add to the Bulldog tally, but it would not be enough, as the Golden Grizzlies claimed the opening contest, 3-1.
Game two started similar to the first, with both teams unable to capitalize on early base runners. The Maroon and White were the first to record a run, after Tori Green stole second, advanced to third and eventually scored after Puckett singled down the right field line.
The Golden Grizzlies quickly responded at the top of the fourth, after a single and a pair of walks put Oakland in scoring position. Alyssa Balcom scored after Brooklyn Wyczalek flied out to right field. The next batter singled up the middle and added two more runs to take a 3-1 lead. Herrington scored again in the top of the fifth after a grounded-out ball to the pitcher.
The Bulldogs scored again at the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough as OU added another to the Golden Grizzly tally at the top of the fifth to solidify their second win of the day, 5-2.
