THE HILL | The Alabama A&M Women's Basketball team returns home after a pair of road victories to take on Grambling State and Southern University on Thursday and Friday. Both games will be live streamed on Bulldogs All-Access. Thursday's contest is set to start at 6 p.m. and will recognize Huntsville teachers, faculty and staff. Tip-off on Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will serve as Divine 9 Organization night.
AAMU went 2-0 last weekend after defeating Bethune-Cookman University 66-49 and Florida A&M 58-54. Lauryn Pendleton and Alisha Wilson each earned Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) weekly recognition for their performances over the weekend. Pendleton averaged 17.5 points, six rebounds and 3.5 steals. The Little Rock, Arkansas native also went a perfect 100% from the foul line through both contests. Kaila Walker, Mailyn Wilkerson and Deter Burgin also scored in double figures in the game against Bethune-Cookman, scoring 15, 11 and 10 points respectively.
Wilson totaled 27 points over the Florida swing, including a 20-point performance in the victory over Florida A&M. She totaled 12 rebounds and six steals in the victories. In addition to Pendleton's 18 points, Walker added 11 points of her own.
Grambling hits the road after going 1-1 at home, defeating Alcorn State 82-69 and falling 56-67 to Jackson State. Four Tigers finished in double figures in their victory over the Braves, paced by Kahia Warmsley's 18 points and seven rebounds. Claire Simmons, Arianna Mosley and Zaria Johnson each contributed 11 points apiece and added a combined 12 rebounds. GSU leads 22-19 in the overall series with the Bulldogs, including victories in the two most recent meetings.
Southern University went 1-1 over the weekend, securing a huge 64-47 victory over Jackson State, but falling 55-59 to Alcorn State in an extra period. Aleighyah Fontenot, Aniya Gourdine and Soniya Reed led the Jaguars in both contests. Gourdine tallied 31 points, 13 rebounds, and five steals while Fontenot scored 25 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Reed contributed 23 points over the weekend. The Jags are tied with the Bulldogs and the Jackson State Tigers for second place in the current conference standings. SU leads 59-50 in the overall series with the Bulldogs, including wins in the last three meetings.
