ATLANTA, Ga. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team fell behind early and could not recover as Georgia State scored in every inning, defeating the Bulldogs, 16-2, on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgia State (8-2) got a solo leadoff homer Kaleb Freeman in the bottom of the first as the Panthers struck for two runs in the opening inning and added five more, including a two-run shot by Michael Maginnis, in the second for a 7-0 lead.
The Panthers added one run in each of the next three innings, stretching the advantage to 10-0 entering the sixth.
Alabama A&M (2-8) got a run back in the top of the sixth as
Trey Rutledge was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and stole second. With one down,
Charles Morris singled to left, moving Rutledge to third.
KJ Stanfield followed with an infield hit as Rutledge scored, cutting the GSU lead to 10-1.
Georgia State answered with one run in the bottom of the frame, pushing the margin to 11-1.
The Bulldogs plate one run in the seventh.
Miles Jackson opened the inning with a single to right and moved to second and third on ground outs. He came across to score on a
Dre Amaral single to left as AAMU trailed, 11-2.
Back came the Panthers in the bottom of the inning, plating two runs in pushing the lead to 13-2.
Georgia State got back-to-back homers by Jesse Donohoe and John Holley to highlight a three-run eighth to put the game of reach.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with two runs on eight hits, committed four errors and stranded six on base
- KJ Stanfield went 3-for-4, with one RBI
- Trey Scott (0-2) surrendered nine runs (six earned) on seven hits, walking seven and striking out one in three in three innings to take the loss
- Nick Espinola worked the final five innings in relief
- Georgia State finished with 16 runs on 15 hits and left five on base
- Michael Maginis, Carter Bailey, Jesse Donohoe and Jae Williams each collected two hits
- Caleb White (2-1) picked up the win, giving up one run on five hits, while fanning eight in six innings
- William Richards, Virgil Heath and Carlos Carmona pitched in relief
