Alabama A&M drops Twinbill to Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas | The Alabama A&M University baseball team opened a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series on Saturday with a doubleheader loss to Texas Southern, falling 6-5 in the opener and 7-6 to complete the nightcap at MacGregor Park.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
After two scoreless innings, Texas Southern (11-17 overall, 4-4 SWAC) broke the 0-0 tie with a solo homer by Tyler Legendre in the third and extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth on a three-run homer by Bryce Hughes.
 
Alabama A&M (8-18, 2-6) tied the game at 4 in the top of the sixth inning.
 
Trey Rutledge opened the frame with a double and with one out, Kylan Duncan homered, closing the gap to 4-2. After a pitching change, Wilmer Cuevas walked and Desmore Joseph was hit by a pitch. Dre Amaral followed and reached on an error as Cuevas and Joseph scored, tying the game.
 
The Bulldogs broke the tie in the top half of the seventh as Rutledge, who walked with one out, scored on Cuevas single, giving AAMU a 5-4 lead.
 
However, the Tigers got a one out, two-RBI from Jaden Jones in the bottom of the seventh, giving Texas Southern the 6-5 advantage.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with five runs on 12 hits, had one error and stranded nine on base
  • Trey Rutledge went 2-for-4, with a pair of runs scored
  • Kylan Duncan was 2-for-4, with two RBI and one run scored
  • Wilmer Cuevas went 2-for-4, with one run scored and one RBI
  • Dre Amaral went 2-for-4, driving in a pair
  • Charles Morris started on the bump, giving up four runs on six hits, struck out two and walked two in five innings
  • Nick Espinola (0-3) took the loss in 2.2 innings of relief
  • Texas Southern finished with six runs on 13 hits, committed three errors and left six on base
  • C. McClendon scattered five hits in 3.0 innings 
  • Jose Luccioni, John Moya and Sidney Moore pitched in relief
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
Alabama A&M jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Trey Rutledge began the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Kylan Duncan.
 
Back came Texas Southern with one run in the bottom of the inning and one in the third to grab a 2-1 advantage.
 
The Bulldogs picked up a pair of runs in the fifth as Duncan scored Miles Jackson and Charles Morris plated Rutledge, giving AAMU a 3-2 lead.
 
Dre Amaral scored Morris with a ground out in the eighth, extending the lead to 4-2.
 
Texas Southern entered the eighth trailing 4-2 and used a five-run inning to grab a 7-4 lead.
 
Alabama A&M nearly answered in the top of the ninth, loading the bases. However, a double play proved costly for the Bulldogs as Duncan delivered a two-out base hit, closing the gap to 7-6. Morris struck out, ending the game and giving TSU the sweep.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with six runs on 11 hits, committed four errors and left seven on base
  • Miles Jackson went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored
  • Charles Morris was 3-for-5, with one RBI and one run scored
  • Kylan Duncan was 1-for-5, but drove in three
  • Trey Rutledge went 2-for-3, with a pair of runs scored
  • Jaiden Proper started for the Bulldogs, giving up two runs on four hits and walking four in seven innings
  • Raymond Clark (1-3) and Edgar Rodriguez pitched in relief
  • Texas Southern finished with seven runs on seven hits and stranded14 on base
  • Kewan Braziel also did not get a decision, surrendering three runs on seven hits, fanning five and two walks in seven innings
  • David Medina and Isaac Garcia worked in relief
