THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University softball team earned their first conference victory after defeating the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes, 10-2, in the first game of a three-contest series on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs showed a strong offense, with three runs in two of the five innings played.
Ariana Montiel and
Allyson Riches led both teams in RBI's.
The Bulldogs started the first inning with high intensity, getting three quick outs, capped by
Charity Bibbs striking out the final batter. The Devilettes responded by striking out
Maria Paula Ocrospoma-Figueroa, but AAMU quickly regained control.
Tori Green crossed home plate off an RBI from Montiel to put the Bulldogs on the board.
Akyndra Montalvo extended the lead with another RBI, bringing in Montiel. The Bulldogs secured a third run when
Allyson Riches singled to right field, allowing Montalvo to cross home plate, putting the Bulldogs up 3-0 in the first inning.
In the second frame, the Bulldogs made a key defensive play early in the inning, as Bibbs threw out a runner at home to catcher
Natalie Picado, preventing MVSU from adding to the scoreboard. The Lady Bulldogs did allow one run, but limited the damage, stranding two MVSU runners to close out the top of the second inning.
At the top of the third, thr Bulldogs put senior pitcher
Paige Scott on the mound, where she struck out the first batter she faced. The Bulldogs continued their defensive dominance, keeping the Devilettes off the board and retiring the side without allowing a single baserunner. AAMU added to their lead as sophomore
Kaidence Swoopes delivered an RBI bringing Allison Riches across home plate.
The Devilettes tallied their second run of the game in the fourth inning when Talah Hunter singled to left field, bringing in sophomore Hailey Akers. However, the Bulldogs held strong, stranding three MVSU runners to close out the top of the frame. AAMU continued their success in the fourth inning with three runs scored.
The Bulldogs capped off the fifth inning with
Dakota Daniel executing a well-placed bunt single, driving in
Ki Davis, who took advantage of an error by the first baseman to score an unearned run. Moments later, Ocrospoma-Figueroa singled to first, bringing in another run as Daniel crossed home plate on a passed ball. The sequence secured AAMU's dominant 10-2 victory.
Alabama A&M is back on the pitch on Saturday, as it concludes it's series with a pair of doubleheaders with the Delta Devils at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Both games will be live streamed via Bulldogs All-Access.
