Big Second Inning Lifts Wildcats past Bulldogs

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University baseball team could not recover from a big second inning by Bethune-Cookman as the Bulldogs dropped the second game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series on Saturday, 9-3, at the Bulldog Baseball Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
After a scoreless opening inning, Bethune-Cookman belted three homers – Amari Newton, Jeter Polledo and Darryl Lee - in the top of the second, grabbing a 6-0 lead.
 
Alabama A&M (9-25 overall, 2-12 SWAC) picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, closing the gap to 6-2.
 
Trey Rutledge began the frame with a base hit to left and advanced to third when Dre Amaral doubled to left. With one out, Charles Morris singled through the right side to plate Rutledge from third. Miles Jackson earned a walk to load the bases and Isaac Castro with a base on balls as Amaral scored.
 
A solo homer by AJ Anderson in the fourth trimmed the deficit to 6-3.
 
The Wildcats (19-16, 12-2) added two runs in the top of the fifth and one more in the sixth for a 9-3 advantage.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with three runs on eight hits, committed one error and stranded 11 on base
  • Trey Rutledge went 2-for-3, with one run scored
  • Nick Espinola (0-5) started for the Bulldogs, surrendering six runs on seven hits, with a pair of walks and one strikeout in 3.0 innings
  • Bryce Dolce, Evan Hurlburt and Raymond Clark pitched in relief
  • Bethune-Cookman finished with nine runs on eight hits and left nine on base
  • Darryl Lee went 1-for-4, with two RBI and one run scored
  • Jeter Polledo went 1-for-2, with two RBI and one run scored
  • Joel Core pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, walking four and fanning four
  • Jean Zambrano (4-1) and Robert Lastra worked in relief
