THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University baseball team dropped a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) doubleheader to Prairie View A&M, 11-7 and 10-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Bulldog Baseball Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
Prairie View A&M (10-31 overall, 6-11 SWAC) opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first inning to grab an early 1-0 lead.
Alabama A&M (10-31, 2-18) answered in the bottom of the inning.
Trey Rutledge led off the frame with a base hit to left and moved to second on an error.
Dre Amaral reached base on a walk.
Kylan Duncan followed with a single through the right side, scoring Rutledge and Amaral.
KJ Stanfield advanced Duncan to third with a flyout to right.
Miles Jackson brought Duncan across with a base hit down the left field line, giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage.
AAMU added to the lead with one run in the third, extending the advantage to 4-1.
Jackson reached on a one-out error and Morris earned a walk.
Elvis Victoriano and
AJ Anderson drew back-to-back walks as Jackson scored.
However, the Panthers responded with seven runs on seven hits in the fourth, taking an 8-4 lead and extended the margin to 10-4 with a pair of runs in the seventh.
PVAMU added one more run in the eighth, stretching its lead to 11-4.
Alabama A&M got some offense going in the bottom of the eighth, scoring a pair of runs to close the gap to 11-6.
Rutledge walked to open the inning and moved to second when Amaral singled to left.
Isaac Castro followed with a base hit to right, scoring Rutledge. Stanfield singled to center to load the bases. Jackson followed with a base hit to left center as Amaral scored but Castro was thrown out at the plate.
The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and came away with one run in falling to PVAMU, 11-7.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with seven runs on 13 hits, had one error and stranded 16 on base
- Miles Jackson went 3-for6, with two RBI and one run scored
- Kylan Duncan was 2-for-4, with two RBI and one run scored
- Trey Rutledge was 2-for-5, with three runs scored
- Nick Espinola (0-7) surrendered eight runs on 12 hits, with four strikeouts and two walks in 4.0 innings
- Evan Hurlburt and Raymond Clark pitched in relief
- Prairie View A&M finished with 11 runs on 17 hits, committed four errors and left 13 on base
- Leonardo Bravo (3-2) picked up the win, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits, fanning seven and walking five in six innings
- Demarques Thompson, Mason Maxie and Seve Medrano worked in relief
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
Prairie View A&M jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, thanks in part to a two-run homer by Brayden Johnson.
Alabama A&M grabbed one run in the bottom of the second, as Morris reached on a one-out base hit and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two down, Xavier Oneal walked and Anderson singled to left to load the bases. Rutledge was hit by a pitch as Morris scored, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
A solo homer by Landen Williams pushed the advantage to 4-1 for the Panthers in the fifth.
The Bulldogs pulled to within one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Rutledge and Amaral drew back-to-back walks in the frame. Rutledge scored on a wild pitch and Amaral came across when Stanfield bounced into a double play, trimming the margin to 4-3.
The Panthers answered in the top half of the sixth with three runs on one hit, and followed that with one run in the seventh for an 8-3 advantage.
The Panthers stretcher their lead to 10-3 with two more runs in the eighth.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with three runs on six hits, committed four errors and left seven on base
- AJ Anderson went 2-for-4
- Jordan Nolley (1-3) pitched three innings, surrendering three runs on two hits, with four walks and a pair of strikeouts
- Edgar Rodriguez, Bryce Dolce, Killian McLaughlin and Kobe Stokes worked in relief
- Prairie View A&M finished with 10 runs on seven hits and stranded 13 on base
- Kamar Dove (3-2) started for the Panthers, giving up three runs on four hits, striking out six and walking four in five innings
- Dakari Hayes pitched the final four innings in relief
