THE HILL | With time ticking down on the shot clock and a tie game,
Coriah Beck gave the Alabama A&M University women's basketball team a three-point lead with 25 seconds remaining, which proved to be the game winner as the Bulldogs survived an upset attempt by Bethune-Cookman, 49-44 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Thursday night at the AAMU Event Center.
Alabama A&M (11-9 overall, 7-1 SWAC) went 1-for-5 from the floor in the final period and held on to win its seventh straight game. Bethune-Cookman (3-18, 1-7) nearly pulled off the upset, rallying from nine down to tie the game at 44, but Beck's triple put AAMU ahead for good.
Moses Davenport, who scored 10 of the first 14 Alabama A&M points, finished just three points shy of tying a career high
Kalia Walker, the SWAC Player of the Week, recorded eight points, including going 6-of-6 from the foul line, along with three assists and one board.
Daimoni Dorsey led the Wildcats with 12 points, five boards and a pair of steals.
First Quarter
Bethune-Cookman jumped out early, capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and perimeter shooting to build a 13–7 lead after one. Alabama A&M was limited offensively in the opening frame but stayed within striking distance with timely defensive stops.
Second Quarter
The Bulldogs flipped the game with a 19–6 second quarter surge. Alabama A&M rattled off a decisive 16–3 run midway through the period, sparked by interior finishes and points off turnovers. Third Quarter
Alabama A&M carried the momentum into the third, extending the lead to as many as nine points behind consistent inside scoring and improved ball movement. Bethune-Cookman responded with a brief run late in the quarter, but the Bulldogs maintained control and entered the final period ahead 40–34.
Fourth Quarter
The Wildcats made one last push, trimming the deficit to four in the closing minutes. Alabama A&M answered by knocking down key free throws and forcing tough possessions on the defensive end. The Bulldogs held Bethune-Cookman scoreless on multiple late trips, sealing the 49–44 victory.
