BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Laura Avila and
Corey Harris posted school records in the 3000m and pole vault, respectively, to highlight the first day of action for Alabama A&M University during the opening day of the 2026 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Avila smashed the previous record in the 3,000m in placing third. She broke the mark of 10:34.24 held by
Sanyae Gibson set earlier this year at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational. Gibson finished fourth in the event, setting a new personal-best time of 10:32.33.
Avila wasn't done in setting records as she was part of the distance medley relay team that broke a four-year old school mark. The team of Avila,
Kennedy Hill,
Minka Isom and
Kayla Fluker claimed third in the event, posting a season-best time of 12:18.77, while broke the previous mark of 12:36.71.
Also breaking a school record was
Corey Harris in the pole vault. He broke his own mark of 4.12m set in 2025 with a fourth-place finish mark of 4.27m.
Laila Gaynor and
Alisha Wilson qualified for the 400m finals. Gaynor ran a season-best time of 54.37 to win the prelims, while Wilson also posted a season-best mark of 55.35, which put her third.
Gaynor is also close to the school mark in the 200m as she finished fifth in the prelims with a season-best time of 23.99. The school record is held by NaAsha Robinson, who registered a time of 23.35 in 2020.
Brianna Samuels qualified fifth in the prelims of the 800m. She logged a time of 2:15.80 to reach the finals. In the women's long jump,
Mariah Lofton finished fifth, with a leap of 5.76m.
On the men's side,
Juan Osorio placed eighth in the 3000m, logging a time of 9:12.44. He also registered a fifth-place finish in the 1-mile prelims to qualify for the final.
In the 400m prelims, JoeQuez Keith, who finished first, is just off the mark of a school record as he posted a season-best time of 47.57 to qualify for the finals. The record time for the event is 45.17 held by Alex Ward.
The distance medley relay team of
Zachary Cooper,
Xavier Turner,
Corey Harris and
Eric Brannon placed fifth, with a season-best time of 10:45.43.
In the long jump,
Justin Walker earned bronze, recording a jump of 7.26m.
Cameron Andrews and
Olivier Jean placed ninth and 10
th, respectively, with leaps of 7.05m and 6.98m.
