MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama A&M softball team dropped a high-scoring contest to Grambling, 19-12, on Sunday afternoon in Montgomery moving 10-5 overall on the season.
The Bulldogs struck first in the top of the opening inning as Ariana Montiel was hit by a pitch, stole second, and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Kara Burman to take an early 1-0 lead. Grambling responded with a six-run bottom half to build separation.
Alabama A&M continued to battle hard at the plate, scoring in five different innings and recording 15 hits in the afternoon.
The Bulldogs plated one run in the second before erupting for four runs in the third. Paula Ocrospoma-Figueroa delivered an RBI single, McKenna Furnari added a sacrifice fly, and Grace Cruthis capped the inning with a two-RBI single to trim the deficit.
In the fourth, AAMU added two more runs as Natalie Picado drove in a run and another scored on a throwing error. The Bulldogs kept their momentum in the fifth inning when Cruthis fueled the offense with an inside-the-park two-run home run to left field. Burman and Ahkeela Honeycutt followed with RBI singles to pull Alabama A&M within striking distance at 14-12.
Cruthis led the Bulldogs with a 4-for-4 performance, including a home run and four RBI. Burman finished with two hits and two RBI, while Picado recorded two hits and an RBI. Austerman added two hits and Montiel scored once and swiped a base.
Grambling answered with a five-run fifth inning to extend the lead and secure the 19-12 decision despite the Bulldogs' strong offensive effort.
