Several Records Fall During Final Day of SWAC Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | It was another record-breaking day for the Alabama A&M University track & field teams on Sunday as the program concluded the two-day Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
 
Laura Avila, the school record holder in the 3000m, added to her total by winning the 5000m, with a personal-best time of 17:40.76, while teammate Sanyae Gibson placed third in 18:19.37. Avila's time broke her own previous mark of 18:18.95 set at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
 
Laila Gaynor won the 400m, posting a season-best time of 53.68 to edge out Prairie View A&M's Nikiyah Williams (53.95). Alisha Wilson paced fifth in the event, recording a season-best time of 55.43.
 
Gaynor, who also finished eighth in the 200m, registering a time of 24.53, was part of the record-breaking 4x400m relay team that won gold. She teamed with Shelby Sanders, Brianna Samuels and Wilson to win the event by nearly two full seconds, logging a time of 3:41.78. The time broke the previous mark of 3:42.93 set by the same group at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational. 
 
Samuels just missed medaling in the 800m, placing fourth with a personal-best time of 2:12.06.
 
On the men's side, Juan Osorio broke the school mark in the 1 mile and finished fourth, logging a time of 4:21.89. The previous record was held by Bravin Kibitok last season, with a time of 4:23.14. Osorio wrapped up the weekend by taking 10th in the 5000m, posting a time of 16:35.45.
 
JoeQuez Keith placed fifth in the men's 400m, logging a personal-best time of 47.96, while Andre Jones finished 10th in the triple jump, logging a season-best mark of 14.08m.
