Alabama A&M Drops Home Opener to Illinois State

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University baseball team trailed by three runs in the sixth inning but could not overcome a six-run seventh in falling, 14-2 in seven innings in the home opener on Wednesday afternoon from the Bulldog Baseball Field.
 
Alabama A&M (2-6) struck first, grabbing a run in the bottom of the second inning as Isaac Castro drew a bases-loaded walk, bringing in Wilmer Cuevas to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
 
Illinois State (6-2) answered in the third inning, capitalizing on a defensive miscue to grab a 2-1 advantage.
 
The Redbirds extended the lead to 4-1 with two more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth, taking a 5-1 advantage into the bottom half of the frame.
 
Alabama A&M responded in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Chris Walker ripped a double down the left-field line to plate Brycen Hammonds, trimming the deficit to 5-2.
 
The Redbirds quickly regained momentum in the sixth with three runs and put the game away in the top of the seventh with six runs on five hits. 
 
The Bulldogs collected five hits, with Keondre Fields and Cuevas each recorded a pair of hits.
 
Alabama A&M tossed six pitchers as starter Antonio Torres worked two innings, fanning four and walking one in the no decision. Raymond Clark (0-1) took the loss in surrendering two unearned runs. Nick Espinola, Grant Minor, Avery Seaton and Kameron Vandersee also pitched out the bullpen.

Alabama A&M returns to action in the Holiday Inn Classic on Friday against Notre Dame. First pitch against the Irish is set for 11 a.m. from Quillen Field at Bush Stadium at the Averitt Express Baseball Complex in Cookeville, Tenn.
