COOKEVILLE, Tenn. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team opened the Holiday Inn Classic on Friday with a 19-2 loss in seven innings to Notre Dame at Bush Stadium.
Notre Dame (4-3) struck early, plating three runs in the top of the first inning before adding five more in the second to take an 8-0 lead. The Irish continued to build momentum with two runs in the third and erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning to extend the margin to 19-0.
Alabama A&M (2-7) managed to break through in the bottom of the sixth and ended the perfect-game bid by Irish starter Jack Radel.
AJ Anderson opened the frame with a base hit and later scored on a
Brycen Hammonds two-out RBI double to left center.
Hammonds and Anderson finished 1-for-3 at the plate to lead the Alabama A&M offense.
Notre Dame tallied 14 hits and drew 11 walks in the contest, going 9-for-19 with runners in scoring position.
Mark Quatrani led the Irish offensively, going 2-for-2 with four runs scored and three RBI, including a triple and a double. Drew Berkland added two hits and three RBI, while Parker Brzustewciz collected three hits and drove in three runs.
On the mound,
Edyn Barber (0-2) took the loss for Alabama A&M after allowing eight runs (seven earned) over two innings of work.
Antonio Torres, Daveyon Lavender,
Raymond Clark, Griff Minor and
Jordan Nolley also saw action in relief.
Radel earned the win, tossing six innings while allowing two runs on two hits and striking out 10.
