THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University baseball team nearly rallied from a four-run deficit, but the rally fell just short as Alcorn State picked up an 8-6 victory to even the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series on Saturday afternoon from the Bulldog Baseball Field.
Alabama A&M (6-14 overall, 1-1 SWAC) outhit the Braves 11–6, but Alcorn State capitalized on key opportunities and Bulldog defensive miscues to secure the win.
Alcorn State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening frame, but the Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 2-1.
The Braves extended their lead in the fourth inning as Trey Adams III delivered an RBI single to right field and later scored on a passed ball, pushing the Braves' advantage to 4–1.
Alabama A&M responded with its biggest swing in the sixth. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs before
Chris Walker ripped a double to right field, clearing the bases and tying the game at 4–4.
The Braves quickly regained control in the seventh inning. Taking advantage of two Alabama A&M errors as Alcorn State plated three runs in the frame to reclaim a 7–4 lead.
ASU added another run in the eighth on an RBI single by Cooper Harris to make it 8–4.
The Bulldogs attempted a late rally in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded,
Keondre Fields reached on a fielding error in right field that allowed
Chris Walker and
AJ Anderson to score, cutting the deficit to 8–6. Alabama A&M, however, could not push across another run.
Miles Jackson led the Bulldogs offensively with three hits, while
Tarris Murray added two doubles. Walker finished with three RBIs and a double, and Fields drove in three runs.
On the mound,
Edyn Barber took the loss after allowing two runs in 1.1 innings.
Antonio Torres,
Virgil Heath,
Evan Hurlburt and
Bryce Dolce combined to cover the remaining frames for Alabama A&M.
Kayden Sutton earned the win for Alcorn State after pitching 7.2 innings and allowing six runs on 10 hits.
